From Pilot Plant to the First Purchase Order: Our Journey to Make a Difference in 2022

As the new year 2023 Starts, we at BIOWEG can’t help but reflect on the significant successes we have had in the quest to bring biobased and biodegradable ingredients to the forefront and make the world a greener place. From securing €12.6 million in funding from the European Innovation Council to receiving our first purchase order and seeing our 300 sqm pilot plant up and running, it has been a whirlwind of a year. We have also grown from a team of 6 to a team of 18, making BIOWEG stronger than ever with a diverse range of expertise. It has been an exciting ride and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Like any growing company, BIOWEG has faced its share of challenges along the way. One of the biggest challenges we have encountered has been scaling up production while maintaining the high-quality standards that our customers expect from us. Hiring the right people to take on key roles has also been critical for building a diverse and productive culture. While it may not have been quite as thrilling as juggling flaming chainsaws or tightrope walking, it has definitely had its moments of intensity!

Despite facing some challenges along the way, BIOWEG has made great strides in 2022 and we are not slowing down! We are excited to continue pushing forward in 2023, focusing on improving the efficiency of our production processes through process engineering and automation. This will allow us to significantly increase our capacity to meet the growing demand for our bacterial cellulose-based sustainable ingredients.

This year, we have had the opportunity to participate in and excel at several accelerators, including Plug & Play in Silicon Valley, SLUSH’22 Helsinki, the Circular Economy, and Tech Tour events in Germany. We have also been honored to receive numerous accolades and continue collaborating with some of the top research and development partners in the industry, including the German Institute of Food Technology, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research, and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy.

In addition to these exciting achievements, we have also had the opportunity to work closely with potential customers to develop creative solutions to their challenges and drive positive change in the cosmetics and personal care industry, as well as the agricultural coating and the processed food sectors.

By replacing synthetic, petroleum-based additives with our sustainable bacterial cellulose-based ingredients, we are not only helping the environment but also enabling our customers to create high-quality products that consumers can feel good about using.

So, here is to a year of successes, challenges, and everything in between. We are grateful for the support of our customers, team, and partners. We are passionate about driving positive change through innovative solutions and are eager to continue this journey. We cannot wait to see what the future holds and are excited to keep making a difference in the world.
